The Two Representations of Sexuality in Romeo and Juliet and The Merchant of Venice Sexuality is a major part of Shakespeare’s plays because he responds to the controversial ways women are represented and the actions that they are involved, like women cross dressing and marriage at a young age. In the two plays, Romeo and Juliet and The Merchant of Venice, the female characters’ representations, Juliet and Portia are written differently. Shakespeare wrote these two female characters’ sexualities differently so the reader can see two different sides of women’s sexuality. Both plays represent the two sides of sexuality, Juliet represents the sexual desire/lust, and Portia represents women’s in-depth sexuality. Sexual desire/ lust is found in a lot of Shakespeare’s plays, including Romeo and Juliet, where sexual desire plays a major role in Juliet’s life. The presence of this sexual desire in Juliet’s life is scattered throughout the plays, from the nurse making dirty comments, to Juliet’s lust for Romeo on their wedding night. The reader is shown a sense of the sexual desire growing from the beginning of the play to the end. In the first act, the reader gets an understand of Juliet’s stand of sexuality as her mother, the nurse and herself discuss the idea of marriage.
